Setup
Build a half-pitch practice with a defensive line, midfield support players, wide channels, and a central finishing zone. Start with a controlled build-up where the attacking team has a spare player to solve pressure before entering the final third.
Practice Description
The attacking team must recognise whether the overload is needed in build-up or higher up the pitch. Once the free player is found, they attack quickly through a wide channel or central combination and finish with realistic box movement.
Coaching Points
- Disguise receiving angle
- Use the third player to escape pressure
- Time the overlapping or underlapping run
- Attack the box with different heights
- Deliver early when the defender is unbalanced
Progressions
- Add a recovering midfielder
- Require one-touch set actions
- Add a transition counter goal for defenders
Regressions
- Start unopposed
- Reduce defensive numbers
- Allow a reset pass to the coach
Player Questions
- When should we combine and when should we carry?
- What run opens the best crossing lane?
- How does the far-side forward adjust to the delivery?
Technology Insight: What Could Be Measured
Track receiving foot, release foot, one-touch actions, directional changes, final-third entries, box arrivals, and shot creation after the overload.
TCC Interpretation: Why This Session Works
This session works because overloads are not treated as a pattern to memorise. Players must read the defensive screen, decide where the spare player matters, and turn possession into an entry or chance.
