Pivot Scanning Transfer Rondo

Objective

Develop the pivot player's ability to scan, receive under pressure, connect play, and protect the team against counter pressure.

Setup

Create two possession boxes with a central pivot channel. The possession team must connect through or around the pivot to transfer the ball from one box to the other. Defenders press in pairs and can score through target gates on regain.

Practice Description

The pivot starts in the central channel and can receive from either box. The possession team should use the pivot only when the body shape and pressure allow it. If the defenders win the ball, the nearest players counter-press and the pivot must screen the forward outlet.

Coaching Points

• Scan before the ball travels
• Receive side-on where possible
• Use disguise to move the pressing pair
• Support the pivot after the first pass
• Screen the central counter if possession is lost

Progressions

• Limit the pivot to one touch
• Allow defenders to enter the pivot channel after three passes
• Award bonus points for a transfer through the pivot followed by a third-player pass

Regressions

• Give the pivot more space
• Allow unlimited touches
• Use one defender before building to a pair
