High-Intensity Rondo to Pressing Transition

Objective

Develop fast possession decisions, aggressive pressing after transfer, and immediate role-switching when the defending pair win the ball.

Setup

Create two 10 x 10 yard grids with a 5-yard channel between them. Split eight players into four pairs. One pair starts as defenders, one pair supports possession in the active grid, and the other pairs are positioned to receive the transfer.

Practice Description

The possession group starts in a 4v2 and looks to complete five passes before transferring through the central channel. When the ball travels, the support pair moves across quickly and the defending pair keeps pressing. If the defenders win it, they switch roles immediately and the new possession pair must react.

• Body shape before receiving
• Scan before the first touch
• Immediate reaction when the ball transfers or possession is lost
• Support angles around the ball
• Clear trigger words for pressing and switching

Progressions

• Limit possession team to two touches
• Add a second transition target
• Reward a defensive regain within five seconds with double points

• Increase the area size
• Start with passive defenders
• Allow unlimited touches for the possession team
