Setup

Set the attacking team against a back line and goalkeeper in the final third. Add wide support players who can receive outside pressure and combine back inside. Defenders score by winning possession and finding mini goals.

Practice Description

The attacking team can rotate and combine freely once the ball enters the final third, but they must maintain support underneath the ball. The wide players provide an overload, but the main coaching focus is timing: when to stay wide, when to arrive inside, and when to attack the box.

Coaching Points

  • Arrive into space rather than standing in it
  • Use wide support to move defenders before attacking centrally
  • Keep one player underneath the ball for security
  • Change speed after the defender shifts
  • Counter-press immediately if the attack breaks down

Progressions

  • Limit wide players to two touches
  • Require a cutback or edge-box support run before scoring
  • Give defenders five seconds to counter into mini goals

Regressions

  • Start with unopposed pattern play
  • Reduce defensive numbers
  • Allow the coach to restart if the attacking shape collapses

Player Questions

  • What movement opens the best passing lane?
  • Who stays connected underneath the attack?
  • When does freedom become standing still?

Technology Insight: What Could Be Measured

Track box entries, cutbacks, wide-to-central combinations, shots created, counter-press regains, and attacking support distances.

TCC Interpretation: Why This Session Works

This session works because it gives players freedom with consequences. They can rotate and create, but poor support distances immediately expose the team on transition.
