Setup

Create a central grid with target players at each end and a possession team with one extra player inside. The objective is to connect from one target to the other by using the overload in midfield.

Practice Description

The possession team scores by transferring the ball from one end target to the other. Defenders press aggressively and can counter into either mini gate on regain. Rotate target players so midfielders experience receiving under pressure, supporting behind the ball, and breaking lines.

Coaching Points

  • Open body shape before receiving from the target
  • Use the spare player to change the pressure line
  • Support underneath the ball after a forward pass
  • Recognise when to bounce, set, or turn
  • Protect central space if the ball is lost

Progressions

  • Limit central players to two touches
  • Add a scoring bonus for a third-player connection
  • Allow defenders to counter for three seconds after regain

Regressions

  • Increase the grid size
  • Give the possession team another neutral
  • Start with passive defenders for the first two passes

Player Questions

  • Where is the spare player before the ball arrives?
  • When should you receive on the back foot and when should you set?
  • What shape protects us if the forward pass is intercepted?

Technology Insight: What Could Be Measured

Track line-breaking passes, target-to-target completions, pressure received, one-touch actions, possession duration, and regain location.

TCC Interpretation: Why This Session Works

This session works because it turns midfield progression into a repeatable decision. Players learn that the overload is only useful if their body shape, support timing, and rest defence are connected.
