GPS Load: What Football Coaches Actually Need to Know

A practical guide to using distance, high-speed running, accelerations, and decelerations without drowning players in data.

GPS data only matters when it helps a coach make a better football decision. The mistake is to treat the numbers as the session. The session is still the session: the players, the pitch, the tactical intention, the opposition, the constraints, and the coaching detail. GPS is a way of checking whether the physical demand matched what you thought you had designed.

Start with the football question

Before looking at distance, sprint metres, or accelerations, ask what the practice was meant to create. A transition game should probably create repeated high-intensity actions, recovery runs, accelerations, decelerations, and moments where players have to act while tired. A build-up practice may produce lower running outputs but still be a brilliant football session if it gives players repeated scanning, body shape, and decision-making pictures. A recovery session should not be judged badly because the data looks quiet. It might have done exactly what you wanted.

The first question is not, did we run enough? The first question is, did the physical profile match the tactical and technical objective?

The core metrics coaches should understand

Total distance gives a general sense of volume, but it can hide what really happened. Two players might cover the same distance in completely different ways. One might jog and reposition for long periods. Another might repeat short explosive actions with very little steady running. Coaches need to know what sits underneath the headline number.

High-speed running and sprint distance show how much work was done above certain speed thresholds. This can be useful when preparing players for match demands, especially wide players, forwards, full-backs, and midfielders who have to cover space repeatedly. The important detail is context. A centre-back in a compact defensive practice may not hit big high-speed numbers, but that does not mean they were not challenged.

Accelerations and decelerations matter because football is full of starts, stops, presses, checks, turns, and recoveries. These actions can be physically demanding even when total distance is not huge. Small-sided games often create lots of acceleration and deceleration load because players are constantly changing speed in tight areas.

Player load or equivalent vendor metrics can be useful as a broad signal, but coaches should be careful. These metrics are often proprietary, which means they are calculated differently depending on the system. Treat them as trend indicators inside the same system, not universal football truth.

Compare like with like

The most useful comparisons are between similar session types, similar player roles, and similar phases of the week. Comparing a Monday recovery session with a Thursday tactical session is rarely helpful. Comparing this Thursday's tactical session with the previous three Thursday tactical sessions is much more useful.

A winger, full-back, centre-forward, and holding midfielder should not always have the same physical outputs. Position, role, and game model shape the demand. A team that presses high will create different running demands from a team that defends deeper. A possession practice with limited space will create a different profile from an 11v11 game across a full pitch.

How to use GPS in weekly planning

A simple week can be planned around intention. Early in the week, players may need recovery, technical rhythm, and lower external load. Midweek might carry the heavier tactical and physical work. Later in the week may sharpen speed, set pieces, team detail, and freshness. GPS helps you check whether the week has drifted.

If the hardest day keeps becoming harder than planned, players may arrive flat on matchday. If the week never reaches enough intensity, players may be underprepared for the real game. If certain players are consistently outside their normal ranges, you have a conversation to start.

Common mistakes

The first mistake is chasing numbers for their own sake. A coach can ruin a good session by stretching the area just to increase running output. The second mistake is ignoring the football context. A low-output player may have performed the role perfectly. A high-output player may have spent the session chasing because their positioning was poor.

The third mistake is speaking to players in data language they do not care about. Players need simple, useful feedback. Tell them what the data means for their role. For example: your repeated recovery runs dropped in the final block, so tomorrow we will look at your starting position and whether you are saving distance by reading the cue earlier.

A simple TCC workflow

Before training, write the intended physical profile next to the session objective. During training, observe whether the behaviours match the design. After training, review three things: team profile, positional profile, and individual exceptions. Then decide whether the next session needs adjusting.

GPS should not make the coach less human. Used properly, it makes the coach more precise. It helps connect what you planned, what the players experienced, and what the next football decision should be.
