Setup
Set up a finishing action around the penalty area with a second ball and two transition mini goals. The forward attacks the first action, finishes the second ball, then immediately defends as a new opponent attacks a mini goal.
Practice Description
The practice deliberately stops players from switching off after a shot. The attacker has to recover body shape, close the ball, delay the counter, and either win it back or force play away from goal.
Coaching Points
- Finish with balance so you can react
- First three steps after the shot must be explosive
- Curve the recovery run to protect the middle
- Delay before diving in
- Win it if possible, force backwards if not
Progressions
- Add a second recovering forward
- Add a goalkeeper and require a second phase press
- Award bonus points for regains that create another shot
Regressions
- Start with a passive counter attacker
- Reduce the recovery distance
- Pause after the shot to rehearse the pressing angle
Player Questions
- What do you do with your body after the shot?
- Can you stop the counter without fouling?
- When is the moment to tackle and when is the moment to delay?
Technology Insight: What Could Be Measured
Track accelerations, decelerations, recovery distance, pressure actions, tackle attempts, and time between shot and first defensive action.
TCC Interpretation: Why This Session Works
This session works because it connects scoring mentality with defensive responsibility. Forwards learn that the attacking action is not finished when the shot leaves the boot.
